Luisa Yu, a 79-year-old resident from Miami, has fulfilled her lifelong dream of traveling around the world. She recently completed her journey to 193 countries, with Serbia being her final stop this year. Born in the Philippines and having moved to Miami over 50 years ago, Yu found warmer weather in her new home by taking two buses and three days to get there.

Yu’s love for travel began in her early 20s when she embarked on an adventure to explore the United States, visiting nearly 45 states. Over the years, she has traveled extensively and met many people from diverse backgrounds. Her friendships with individuals of all ages have earned her the affectionate nickname “Mama.”

At the request of many friends she made during her travels, Yu made her final trip to Serbia, where she was greeted with cheers and applause upon arrival at the airport. Although it is difficult for her to choose a favorite country, Italy, the Philippines, and Thailand are among her top picks. Her advice to aspiring travelers is to not be afraid and simply go. She encourages them not to wait for anyone else’s approval before embarking on their own journeys.

Yu’s dedication to travel has paid off as she has received two awards related to travel in 2022. These accolades have enabled her to purchase a home and travel independently. As she approaches her 80th birthday in a few months, Yu reflects on what she has accomplished in life with contentment and gratitude towards those who have been kind to her throughout her travels.
