Two James Madison redshirt juniors, Davide Materazzi and Demitri Turner, have been named to the College Sports Communicators Division I Men’s Soccer Academic All-District Team. To be eligible for this honor, athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50 and either start in 66% or compete in 90% of all matches.
Materazzi is currently in his first semester of the sport and recreation leadership graduate program at JMU. Prior to joining JMU, he earned his bachelor’s degree in sport management from Davis & Elkins with a cumulative GPA of 3.579. This season, he has started all 19 matches, scored two goals, and played a crucial role in anchoring the team’s defense.
Turner, who is majoring in quantitative finance with a 3.762 GPA, has also started all 19 matches this season and scored his first career goal against Coastal Carolina. He has accumulated a total of seven points this season.
JMU will face off against No. 25 Loyola Marymount in the round of 16 on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals to face the winner of fifth-seeded West Virginia and Vermont.
Both Materazzi and Turner have demonstrated their commitment to both academics and athletics throughout their time at JMU and beyond, making them valuable members of the team both on and off the field.
The College Sports Communicators Division I Men’s Soccer Academic All-District Team recognizes student-athletes who have achieved academic excellence while excelling on the field as well as demonstrating leadership skills within their teams.
Materazzi has shown great leadership skills by starting all games this season and playing an important role in anchoring the team’s defense while Turner has demonstrated strong technical skills by scoring his first career goal against Coastal Carolina.
