Matanuska-Susitna Borough eliminates the need for business licenses

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly has unanimously voted to repeal the business license requirement for businesses operating in the borough, effective immediately. This move comes after a review of the borough’s licensing requirements and their impact on local businesses.

The license was first implemented in 1995 and required a $100 fee with renewal every two years. However, data from these registrations has not been used for economic development purposes for at least 20 years and is primarily used as a business tax. As such, eliminating this requirement will result in a loss of approximately $541,000 in annual income from license fees.

Borough officials plan to offset this loss by reallocating business license staff to focus on securing new federal funding sources through grant applications. They believe that this move will streamline the process of operating in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough and benefit businesses by reducing costs and bureaucracy.

Businesses in Alaska must still have a state-issued license with a $50 annual fee, as well as city-issued licenses for any cities within Mat-Su where they operate, like Palmer, Wasilla, and Houston ($25 per year). State and city requirements for business licenses still apply to all entities operating within the borough.

Over 10,000 entities currently hold borough business licenses, but the repeal will not result in any refunds for those who have already paid for their licenses prior to this change. The proposal to repeal the business license requirement was sponsored by Mayor Edna DeVries and assembly members Dee McKee and Rob Yundt.
