The T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability at Mississippi State University is excited to host a hands-on training session focused on the innovative technology of sensors for power wheelchairs. Titled “A Day with LUCI,” the event will take place on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, located in MSU’s College of Education.
The training is aimed at professionals in the field of assistive technology, including occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, teachers, and counselors who want to learn more about LUCI, a smart sensor power wheelchair system designed to prevent injury and damage during wheelchair use.
During the hands-on training session, participants will have the opportunity to learn about LUCI’s programming options and features while also practicing using it on different styles of wheelchairs. Smart sensors in the LUCI system alert users when they are too close to an obstacle, enhancing safety and promoting independent mobility.
Rebecca Mathis, an assistive technology specialist at the T.K. Martin Center, emphasized the importance of hands-on experience in understanding technology and its limitations. The session aims to foster collaboration and learning across disciplines that work with assistive technology while providing participants with a CEU credit upon completion of the course.
Registration for A Day with LUCI is $150 per person and can be done through the T.K. Martin Center website online before April 24th deadline . Participants must register before this date as space is limited due to COVID-19 restrictions .
