Mars Exploration Mission Continues with Exciting Discoveries on Sol 2474

On Sol 2474, the rover awakened early to begin a day of environmental monitoring activities. The planning was chaired by the SOWG and covered only two sols instead of the usual three due to a soliday on Saturday. This soliday was celebrated as the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, recognizing the contributions of early explorers and paving the way for the exciting exploration being conducted on other planets today.

The focus of the mission is to use the DRT, MAHLI, and APXS instruments to characterize variations in sedimentary structures and composition at an outcrop called “Sandside Harbour.” Mastcam multispectral observations will analyze two distinct sections of the outcrop, as well as a unique fin of bedrock at “Joppa Shore.” Mastcam will also document nearby stratigraphy at “North Minch” and an interesting green rock dubbed “Halkirk.” ChemCam will examine the chemistry of two areas: “Blackstones Bank” and “Essendy,” comparing the darker and lighter portions of the outcrop. A large Mastcam mosaic of “Sandside Harbour” is also planned.

On Sol 2475, Navcam will monitor atmospheric conditions with a suprahorizon movie and dust devil survey. Following this, the rover will drive west to another outcrop for post-drive imaging in preparation for contact science activities on Sol 2476.
