Maine wins opener in America East baseball tournament

COLLEGES

Matt McElwain belted a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning, and Nick White and Quinn McDaniel also homered as best-seeded Maine (30-19) opened its quest for the America East championship with a ten-7 win more than UMass Lowell (20-34) in Binghamton, New York.

White hit an RBI double in the 1st inning and two-run homer in the third. Jeremiah Jenkins was three for four with two RBI, Connor Goodman also drove in two runs, and McDaniel scored 3 occasions.

Noah Lewis (7-1) was credited with the pitching victory, enabling 4 runs (3 earned) on 5 hits more than five 1/three innings following he relieved Colin Fitzgerald in the third inning. Justin Baeyens retired the final 3 batters for his seventh save of the season.

Maine plays a winners’ bracket game at 1 p.m. Friday against UMBC or Binghamton.

Former Bonny Eagle star Jacob Humphrey was 1 for five with two runs scored for Lowell.

GIRO d’ITALIA: Geraint Thomas celebrated his 37th birthday with a further powerful ride in the mountains to retain the all round leader’s pink jersey following the 18th stage – a one hundred-mile route from Oderzo to Val di Zoldo that incorporated quite a few climbs, with an uphill finish.

Thomas crossed right away behind Primoz Roglic, who moved up from third location to second. Thomas, the 2018 Tour de France champion, leads Roglic by 29 seconds and Joao Almeida by 39 seconds.
