Lions’ Close Call in 2023: GM Holmes Keeps Sights on Sustained Success through Process and Draft Picks

The Lions narrowly missed out on reaching the Super Bowl in 2023, falling short against the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Despite this disappointment, General Manager Brad Holmes remains focused on sustained success rather than a short-term “all-in” approach. He looks to models like the Patriots and Chiefs for inspiration, believing that continued improvement through their process is key to achieving long-term success.

In order to build their roster, the Lions have made key draft picks such as Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, Kerby Joseph, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Sam LaPorta. They also acquired quarterback Jared Goff in a trade with the Rams in 2021 and added Carlton Davis, D.J. Reader, and Kevin Zeitler during the offseason.

As they entered the draft with the 29th pick, Holmes emphasized the importance of sticking to their process and not getting caught up in the excitement of making big trades or reaching for flashy prospects too early in the selection process. He jokingly hoped that fans would forgive them if they did decide to make such a move.

Despite missing out on a championship in 2023, Holmes remains optimistic about the future of the Lions and their ability to achieve sustained success through their focus on continuous improvement and adherence to their process.
