The Transformation of Lebanon’s Blue Economy by 2024

Lebanon is set to benefit from the implementation of the Blue Economy component as part of the SwitchMed II activities. This initiative, launched by UNEP in partnership with the Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development, will be implemented both at a national and local level, with Saida being used as a case study.

The main objective of this partnership is to promote sustainable practices and policies that will benefit Lebanon’s economy while also protecting the environment. One of the key activities within this partnership is the organization of Lebanon’s first ‘National Blue Economy Conference’, which will take place under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment. The conference is scheduled to take place on May 2nd in Beirut, Lebanon.

This event aims to bring together high-level political and technical experts to discuss ways to transition towards a more circular, environmentally resilient, and prosperous Blue Economy in Lebanon. By facilitating partnerships and collaboration between key stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, as well as academic institutions and civil society, the conference hopes to create momentum for sustainable development in the country.

The work carried out in Saida will be showcased during the conference to demonstrate how local actions can contribute to long-term sustainability goals. Furthermore, following the conference, on-ground activities and a city-wide validation process of the local action plan on Blue Economy in Saida will take place. This emphasizes multi-actor engagement and multi-level governance are crucial in achieving sustainability goals.

In conclusion, UNEP’s partnership with Hariri Foundation for Sustainable Human Development has kicked off an important initiative aimed at promoting sustainable practices and policies that benefit Lebanon’s economy while protecting its environment. The National Blue Economy Conference is an exciting opportunity for stakeholders from all sectors to come together and discuss how we can transition towards a more sustainable future for our country.
