Japan has just unveiled new banknotes for the first time in 20 years, featuring 3D holograms to combat counterfeiting. The redesigned 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen bills were created to honor Japanese capitalism, women’s equality, and scientific innovation.
The holograms on the bills depict historical figures such as Eiichi Shibusawa, Umeko Tsuda, and Shibasaburo Kitasato. Each figure represents a different aspect of Japan’s history and contribution to society. The 10,000 yen bill showcases Eiichi Shibusawa, known for his role in modernizing Japan’s economy during the Meiji era. The 5,000 yen bill features Umeko Tsuda, a trailblazer in women’s education who founded the precursor to Tsuda University in Tokyo. The 1,000 yen note portrays Shibasaburo Kitasato, a bacteriologist known for his work in preventing diseases like tetanus and diphtheria.
While digital payments are becoming increasingly popular in Japan, cash remains an important part of its economy. Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda emphasized that cash will continue to be a significant form of payment due to its security and accessibility. The government plans to print approximately 7.5 billion new banknotes by March of the following year while existing bills will remain valid for use.
The redesigned banknotes aim to celebrate Japan’s rich history and technological advancements while also committing itself to inclusivity. With holograms designed to deter counterfeiters and a focus on key societal values, these new bills symbolize Japan’s progress and dedication to preserving its cultural heritage.
