On Saturday, the Israeli military conducted airstrikes on the Syrian city of Damascus, killing at least three people and injuring a large number of others. According to reports from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), which has a network of information sources in Syria, the attack took place in the neighborhood that houses mansions of members of the army and high-ranking officials.
The Syrian state news agency, Sana, reported that a military source had announced that Israel carried out an air aggression targeting several targets in the vicinity of Damascus. The air defense systems intercepted some rockets, while others caused material damage. SOHR also reported that on Friday, the area around Mazza military airport, west of Damascus, was attacked without specifying who was behind the missile attack. Militant groups such as Hezbollah are known to be present in this area.
Israel has been conducting hundreds of attacks against these groups since 2011 when the Syrian civil war began. The Israeli military has increased its attacks on armed groups backed by Iran since last October’s war with Hamas began. Iran is an ally of Syria’s President Assad and a key sponsor of Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Israel claims that it will not allow Iran’s influence to grow in Syria.
