Israel Experiences a Surge in West Nile Fever Cases: Precautions and Prevention Measures

On Monday, July 1, the Israeli Ministry of Health reported that 87 people have been diagnosed with West Nile fever so far. There are also suspicions of West Nile fever in another 10 patients, pending final diagnosis after receiving test results. Unfortunately, seven patients have died from the disease, with no change in mortality rate since the last data update on June 28.

The average age of the patients is 73 years old, with the youngest being 8 years old and the oldest 98 years old. All cases of the disease have been reported in central Israel. West Nile fever, caused by the bite of an infected mosquito, has been known in Israel for some time. Unlike some diseases, it is not transmitted from person to person.

West Nile fever can cause a range of symptoms such as fever, fatigue, headaches, and body pain. In rare cases, neurological complications may occur including meningitis and encephalitis which can be life-threatening. Older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of developing severe symptoms or complications from West Nile virus infection.

To reduce the risk of infection, residents are encouraged to take precautions against mosquito bites such as applying insect repellent and wearing protective clothing when outdoors during peak mosquito breeding season. Local authorities should also be notified about any potential mosquito breeding hazards such as standing water sources or sewer breaks that can contribute to mosquito infestation. By working together and taking proactive measures communities can reduce the risk of West Nile fever infection.

It is important for individuals to seek medical attention if they suspect they may have contracted West Nile virus infection or if they experience any severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing or confusion.

The Ministry of Environment and Health issued instructions to clean public sewers and remove stagnant water sources that act as breeding grounds for mosquitoes in order to prevent future outbreaks.
