Iraqi Prime Minister Inspects Anbar Power Station: A Strategic Initiative Facing Unforeseen Challenges

During his recent visit to Anbar governorate, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani inspected the Anbar combined power station project in the Euphrates district. He met with the executing company at the project headquarters to discuss the progress of the ongoing work and to ensure that it is completed according to required specifications. Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of not delaying this strategic initiative, which began in 2013 and was halted for approximately 8 years due to ISIS terrorist occupations in the governorate.

The Anbar power station project is a key part of the government’s efforts to remove obstacles to lagging projects and improve infrastructure and energy capabilities in Iraq. The station is expected to have a capacity of 1640 megawatts, utilizing local natural gas from the Okaz gas field as fuel to reduce energy production costs and ensure a stable energy supply. Currently, four gas units and two steam units are part of the station’s setup, with a completion rate of 50%.

During his visit, Al-Sudani also reviewed the status of electricity service throughout Anbar governorate and followed up on the Akkas gas project, which will provide fuel for the power station once completed. This visit highlights the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and energy capabilities in Iraq, despite challenges such as ISIS occupations and other obstacles that have hindered progress on projects like Anbar power station.
