Indigenous Resistance Thwarted as Massive Bridge Construction Begins in Peru’s Amazon Rainforest

Peru’s longest and costliest bridge remains unused

In northeastern Peru, a massive bridge has been constructed across the Nanay River as part of a federal highway project. The bridge reaches into virgin areas of the Peruvian Amazon and is expected to connect Iquitos with El Estrecho on the border with Colombia, covering a distance of approximately 188 kilometers (117 miles). However, this ambitious project has faced strong opposition from indigenous tribes in the region.

Indigenous leaders argue that the construction of this highway will lead to land grabbing, deforestation, and drug trafficking, issues that have plagued similar projects in the Amazon rainforest. Leaders like Everest Ochoa from the Maijuna indigenous group are concerned about the impact of the road on their communities and the environment. Despite concerns raised by indigenous groups and environmental organizations, construction has already begun on this massive 2.3-kilometer bridge over the Nanay River.

The Transport Ministry defends this project as a way to connect people in the region and boost local economies. However, there are concerns about land grabbing and deforestation in the area as two protected areas may be crossed by this road. Indigenous communities like Centro Arenal are already experiencing encroachment on their land and lack access to justice in face of these challenges. While there is no doubt that this project will bring economic benefits to some communities, it is important to consider its potential negative impacts on both indigenous communities and the environment before further construction begins.
