Michelle Gulyas and Balazs Szep of Hungary have won the mixed relay title at the UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final 2024 in Ankara, Turkey. This victory came on the heels of Csaba Bohm’s men’s title win on Saturday, making Hungary the dominant force at the event. Gulyas and Szep scored a total of 1381 points, securing first place ahead of Egypt (1372 points) and the Republic of Korea (1341 points).
Gulyas and Szep started strong by finishing second in the fencing event with 27 victories. They then took the lead after the swimming leg, recording the fastest time of 1:57.94. Their strong performance continued in the riding round where they earned 293 points, placing them just four points behind Egypt, who had the highest score in that segment.
As the competition moved into the laser run round, Hungary’s lead was threatened by Egypt’s team of Salma Abdelmaksoud and Ahmed Hamed, who moved from third to second place. While Abdelmaksoud and Hamed had the best laser run leg with a time of 12:41.20, Hungary maintained their lead with a third-best time of 12:53.00.
This event was crucial for pentathletes looking to earn ranking points for Paris 2024 qualification, with Zhengzhou serving as their final opportunity to qualify. Hungary’s successful performance in this mixed relay title highlights their strength in modern pentathlon overall.
The competition also showcased a tight battle between Hungary and Egypt for supremacy throughout each event. The two teams were neck-and-neck coming into Sunday’s finale but ultimately fell short by just four points.
