Hungary takes the helm of the European Union presidency rotation

Hungary, under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, took over the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) on Monday. Orbán, a key figure in the international nationalist right, is known for his conservative views on immigration and Euroscepticism. The motto for Hungary’s presidency is “Let’s make Europe great again.”

Orbán met with Alexander De Croo, the head of the Belgian government, which previously held the rotating presidency of the EU for six months. During their meeting, they discussed Hungary’s priorities for its term as president. Hungarian European Affairs Minister János Bóka stated that strengthening European competitiveness is central to Hungary’s agenda. The Hungarian presidency aims to sign a new European pact for competitiveness during its term, focusing on identifying areas for decision-making to enhance competitiveness.

In addition to competitiveness, Hungary’s priorities include common defense, defense of external borders, expansion of the EU, promotion of cohesion and agricultural policies, and addressing demographic issues. Budapest also plans to promote integration processes in Western Balkan countries and deepen relations with China. However, achieving unanimous votes on foreign policy decisions is challenging within the EU.

The slogan chosen by Orbán has raised eyebrows as it echoes that used by former US President Donald Trump. Orbán also announced the formation of a new right-wing nationalist and Eurosceptic group in the European Parliament called Patriots for Europe in collaboration with parties from Austria and the Czech Republic.

Orbán’s actions have received mixed responses from both supporters and critics alike. While some view his moves as provocations that go against EU values such as liberalism and equality, others see them as necessary steps towards protecting Hungarian interests and promoting a stronger Europe that prioritizes economic growth and national security over multiculturalism or political correctness.

Overall, Orbán’s presidency will likely be marked by his efforts to uphold Hungary’s interests while pushing for a more competitive Europe that benefits all member states equally.
