Henderson Bay Greater College students had been supplied the opportunity to find out how to help their peers dealing with mental wellness challenges thanks to PSD’s partnership with Communities In Schools and the Tacoma Pierce County Wellness Division.
The Mental Wellness Initially Assist course was supplied to students in 10th by way of 12th grade for two weeks in March. The class teaches mental wellness help for buddies, how to help all through a substance use overdose, and sources/tools to use in situations when an person they know is in crisis.
HBHS students had been taught by Counselor Annie Schuster and Communities In Schools Strategy Director Laurel Shultz. Shultz, a member of the Gig Harbor/Essential Peninsula Suicide Prevention Coalition, talked about the class was presented thanks to a grant from the TPCHD.
“We do mental wellness education for adults who operate with youths, and this class is the subsequent step. To bring the education to the teens,” Shultz talked about.
The course is three, 90-minute classes that ends with students becoming a certified mental wellness initial aider.
“It is really full. It is about one thing that can be a crisis, or a mental wellness challenge,” Shultz talked about. “We give them the sources, the tools, and we concentrate on them prioritizing their private safety and mental wellness.”
Student Chiarra B. enjoyed the class, and talked about she is glad to have the understanding vital to help her buddies if a have to have arises.
“A lot of my buddies are in AP classes and have a lot of tension on their plates,” Chiarra talked about. “So I figured, if I take this education it could help them in some way.”
