Heatwave Dangers: Stay Safe with Diamond’s Tips on Heatstroke Prevention Day

As the temperatures continue to rise in Shasta County, it is crucial to be prepared for the potential dangers that come with the heat. Today is Heatstroke Prevention Day, and it is a good time to learn ways to avoid heat-related illnesses. Christopher Diamond, a Community Education Specialist with the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency, shared some tips to stay safe in the warm weather.

One of the key ways to prevent heat-related illness is to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. It is also important to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, wear light and loose-fitting clothing, and seek shade when outside. Diamond emphasized the importance of staying aware and keeping loved ones safe as the temperature rises.

Scheduling outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day and moving outdoor pets indoors can also help lower the risk of heatstroke. Recognizing the symptoms of heatstroke, such as high body temperature, dizziness, confusion, and nausea, is important. If someone shows signs of heatstroke, it is a medical emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.

Diamond stressed the importance of checking on vulnerable individuals who may be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, such as the elderly, individuals with disabilities or chronic health conditions, those on fixed or low incomes, and people experiencing homelessness. It is important to offer assistance and support to those who may be at risk during the hot months.
