Hamas and Islamic Jihad leaders make diplomatic visit to Tehran

Ismail Haniyya, the head of Hamas’s Politburo, and Ziyad al-Nahala, the Secretary General of Islamic Jihad, both visited Tehran on March 26. The Hamas delegation was received by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while Iranian sources reported that at the same time as Haniyya, al-Nahala also visited Tehran.

Ismail Haniyya was born in January 1963 in a Palestinian refugee camp in Gaza. He graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza in Arabic literature and joined Hamas in 1987. In 1992, he was deported by Israeli authorities to South Lebanon and returned to Gaza a year later. Haniyya worked at the Islamic University and served as one of Sheikh Ahmad Yassin’s closest assistants before becoming head of Hamas government in Gaza after Yassin and his successor were assassinated. In May 2017, he became head of Hamas’s Politburo and had his tenure extended for another four years in August 2021. He now lives in Doha (Qatar) with an estimated personal fortune of over $4 billion.

Ziyad al-Nahala was born in Khan Yunis (Gaza Strip) in 1953 and detained several times by Israeli authorities for extremist actions as a teenager. Sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorist attacks, he was released on May 21, 1985 as part of the “Jibril deal.” After his release from prison, he joined the ranks of Islamic Jihad and formed its military wing called the Al-Quds Brigade. He participated in the first intifada as a brigade commander before being arrested and deported to Lebanon in August 1988. He became deputy secretary general of Islamic Jihad in 1995 before becoming its secretary general on September 28, 2018 after Ramadan Shalah became seriously ill. Ziyad al-Nakala is considered one of America’s most dangerous terrorists wanted with an offer of $5 million for information leading to his capture and his accounts have been frozen by American authorities.
