Republican Congressman Who Opposed Mayorkas’ Impeachment Announces Retirement

Rep. Mike Gallagher, a rising GOP star in Wisconsin, recently announced that he will not seek reelection after rejecting his party’s push to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Gallagher, who has been viewed as a major force in the effort to push back against the Chinese government and chaired the Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, has been a major player in the Republican party for several years now.

In his statement, Gallagher explained that his initial promise to treat his time in office as a high-intensity deployment was fulfilled. He highlighted his bipartisan work on various committees, chairing the Cyberspace Solarium Commission, and chairing the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party in his announcement. Gallagher’s decision to vote against the Mayorkas impeachment was not mentioned in the statement, but it intensified the delicate nature of the GOP’s narrow House majority. Gallagher was one of just four House Republicans who broke ranks to reject the impeachment. This vote is seen as further evidence of the Republican party’s fragile position in the House.

Gallagher’s announcement follows his decision last June not to challenge incumbent Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin, greatly impacting the GOP’s prospects in the swing state of Wisconsin. With
