Richard E. “Dick” Mitchell, a beloved resident of Altoona, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday at the age of 79. Born in Altoona to Lester and Kathryn (Estep) Mitchell, Dick was a devoted son who cherished his upbringing in the city.
In 1965, Dick married Terry Cowher in Altoona and they shared a loving bond for over 58 years. Together, they raised two wonderful sons, Grant and Brian, both of whom reside in Altoona today.
Dick was a man of many talents and interests. He spent over 30 years working as a machinist and foreman for Norfolk Southern Corp., before retiring to pursue his passion for trains. He opened and operated Dick’s Train Store in Juniata for several years and also worked as a DJ Spinner for 15 years.
Dick was an active member of the Alto Model Train Association Inc., where he enjoyed spending time with his fellow members and sharing his love for trains with others. He took great pride in being involved in local model train clubs and making meaningful connections with those around him.
A devoted husband, father, and friend, Dick was known for his kind heart and generous spirit. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on through the lives he touched along the way.
Friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov
