Georgia ranked #2 in Forbes Advisor’s study of the worst states for mental health care in 2024

In a recent study, it has been revealed that Georgia is among the top 5 worst states for mental health care in 2024. Accessing affordable mental health treatment is a significant challenge faced by Americans across the country, with more than half of adults with a mental illness not receiving any treatment and over one in four not receiving adequate treatment, according to Mental Health America.

Some states face additional challenges in accessing mental health care, including high costs, limited treatment centers, and lack of health insurance coverage. To determine the worst states for mental health care, Forbes Advisor compared all 50 states and Washington, D.C., across seven key metrics.

Georgia was found to be the #2 worst state for mental health care. The state had the fourth fewest mental health treatment centers per 10,000 businesses and the highest percentage of adults unable to see a doctor for mental health due to cost. Texas ranked as the worst state, with the second-highest percentage of uninsured adults with a mental illness and the second-highest percentage of youth with depression not receiving mental health services. Following Texas and Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi were also among the worst states for mental health care.
