Vikings suspend Offensive Coordinator Wes Phillips for three weeks after his December arrest

In February, Wes Phillips, the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, pleaded guilty to careless driving and was sentenced to one year of probation, a $378 fine, and eight hours of community service. The arrest occurred in December when he was pulled over for speeding and tested above the state’s legal blood-alcohol limit of 0.08%. Despite this setback, Phillips has been suspended by the team for three weeks without pay.

Phillips showed signs of impairment when he was stopped and his blood-alcohol level tested at 0.10%. He was arrested on Dec. 8 and released the next day after posting a $300 bond. Despite being arrested, Phillips joined the Vikings on their team flight to Las Vegas later that day and was not disciplined during the regular season.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell expressed disappointment in Phillips following the arrest but emphasized that he cared deeply about him. The suspension will affect Phillips’ ability to contribute to the team during pre-draft preparation and the beginning of their offseason strength and conditioning program.

Phillips acknowledged his mistake during a press conference in December, pledging to learn from it and accept any discipline that came his way. He is the son of former NFL head coach Wade Phillips and grandson of former NFL head coach Bum Phillips.
