Amanda Flann began growing her own sourdough starter in January 2022 and started selling baked goods through a direct-to-consumer, porch-pickup business in June of that same year. As she bakes, her three-year-old daughter, Scottie, is always close by offering a small but helpful hand. Flann wanted to ensure that her daughter never felt like she was second to her job, as she believes that this time with her daughter is irreplaceable.
The business, As Much As You Knead, was founded during what Flann described as a challenging season of life. She found baking to be a restful activity and wanted to start her own business to be able to stay home with her daughter. In December 2022, she began offering sourdough-making classes, which she enjoys as an extrovert and people person.
For Mother’s Day last year, Flann offered pre-painted bread decorated with flowers as a unique gift. Now, she and her daughter are preparing to hold a class together where loved ones and their children can create painted bread of their own. Flann believes that this class is a special opportunity for her and her daughter to work together and share the joy of baking with others.
The “Mommy & Me Sourdough Painting” class will be held on Saturday, May 11 at Poly’s Place Coffee from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost is $45 per person, and participants will each receive a fresh-baked sourdough loaf to decorate with food-safe paint and markers. Flann expresses gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside her youngest best friend and teach others the art of baking.
