52-year-old Mr. Mikhail, a man from Russia, traveled to Vietnam for work and experienced chest pain. Initially, he ignored the pain as he thought it was just work stress. However, the pain worsened two days later and lasted longer, prompting him to seek medical attention in the emergency room in Ho Chi Minh City. It was then that he was diagnosed with Wellens syndrome, a pre-myocardial infarction condition.
Dr. Vo Anh Minh, head of the Coronary Intervention Unit at Tam Anh General Hospital explained that Wellens syndrome can lead to severe heart complications if left untreated. Mr. Mikhail’s anterior interventricular artery was 95% blocked, and a stent was placed to restore blood flow and prevent a heart attack.
After the procedure, Mr. Mikhail felt relieved and resumed normal activities. Dr. Tran Trung Kien from the Cardiovascular Center emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Recommendations included quitting smoking, managing stress, eating a healthy diet, and staying physically active. Regular health check-ups are especially important for those with underlying conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes.
Mr. Mikhail had a history of high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, and obesity which made him more susceptible to cardiovascular diseases.
His journey to Vietnam marked his first experience with chest pain but it would not be his last encounter with heart issues as he had been experiencing occasional chest pains since April before doctors in Russia found no abnormalities.
In conclusion Mr. Mikhail’s case highlights the importance of seeking medical attention when experiencing any symptoms of chest pain or discomfort as well as making lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of heart disease.
