Problems Arise in California and Oregon Following Drug Release

On Tuesday (25), the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of Brazil made a majority decision to decriminalize the possession of marijuana for personal use. This decision has sparked concerns about potential consequences that such measures may bring. Looking at the United States, specifically states like California and Oregon, we can see how similar policies have affected society.

In Oregon, the decriminalization of drugs led to serious problems after the approval of Measure 110 in 2020. Authorities faced challenges such as an increase in homelessness, businesses leaving cities and record numbers of homicides. The spread of fentanyl and drug consumption became significant issues, leading to an increase in violent crimes, property crimes and outdoor drug use.

According to reports, law enforcement officers noted a rise in availability of heroin and fentanyl as well as an increase in drug overdoses and deaths in the state after Measure 110 was passed. The overall safety of communities was a growing concern due to public disorder crimes. In response to negative outcomes, Oregon reconsidered Measure 110 leading to criminal penalties being restored for drug possession starting from September.

California also faced challenges with illegal marijuana market thriving despite legalization in 2016. The ease of access to legalized marijuana boosted illegal trade, prompting criminal networks to expand their activities in the state. Efforts by authorities were insufficient against illegal market growth which led to an increase in violent crimes and property crimes as well as illegal marijuana exports to other states.

The decriminalization of drugs in these states has highlighted complexities and unintended consequences that come with such policies, making it clear that further research is needed before implementing similar measures on a national or international level.

The Federal Supreme Court’s decision has sparked discussions about decriminalizing cannabis for personal use in Brazil, but it has also raised questions about potential unintended consequences that could arise from such measures. As we can see from examples like California and Oregon, there are complexities involved when it comes to decriminalizing drugs for personal use.

While some argue that legalizing drugs would reduce crime rates and improve public health, others worry about the risks associated with increased availability of drugs.

Ultimately, any policy changes must be carefully considered before being implemented on a large scale.

It is important for policymakers to take into account all factors before making any decisions regarding decriminalization or legalization policies related to cannabis or any other drug.
