From Just Walk Out to Smart Carts: Amazon Fresh Stores’ Evolution

BySamantha Jones

Just Walk Out technology is being removed by Amazon from its Fresh grocery stores in the US

Amazon Fresh stores are undergoing changes as the company moves away from the Just Walk Out technology and introduces smart carts. This decision is part of an effort to revamp the grocery chain and meet the needs of customers who wanted to see their receipts and savings while shopping. The company will focus on remodeling existing stores and selectively opening new ones, with CEO Andy Jassy acknowledging challenges in finding the right formula for physical grocery.

While Just Walk Out technology will no longer be available in Amazon Fresh stores, it will still be offered in Amazon Go stores and some smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K. The company will also continue providing the technology to third-party retailers, offering a cashier-free shopping experience.

With this shift in technology at Amazon Fresh stores, customers can now skip the checkout line while tracking their spending in real time, addressing their preferences and needs.
