7 Things to Know About the Rabies Vaccine

The rabies virus is a dangerous and deadly disease that can cause fatalities if not treated promptly. Despite widespread awareness, many people still fall victim to this disease due to a lack of vaccination after being bitten or scratched by animals. Dr. Bui Thanh Phong, Medical Manager of the VNVC Vaccination System, emphasized the importance of timely vaccination to prevent rabies, which has a high mortality rate. In the first three months of 2024, 27 deaths from rabies were reported in Vietnam, highlighting the urgency of vaccination.

To ensure people understand the importance and are vaccinated promptly, Dr. Phong outlined seven key points regarding rabies vaccination. It is essential to receive the vaccine early after an animal bite to produce specific antibodies that prevent the rabies virus from reaching the nervous system. Vaccination should be accompanied by anti-rabies serum for enhanced effectiveness. Even if the animal appears healthy after a bite, vaccination is still necessary as the virus can have a long incubation period before symptoms manifest.

Contrary to popular beliefs, people vaccinated against rabies do not need to abstain from sexual activity. However, during the vaccination period, it is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activities and substances that may reduce the efficacy of the vaccine. A single shot of the vaccine is insufficient to provide long-term immunity, necessitating a full regimen prescribed by a healthcare professional to prevent illness and death.

Pregnant women can safely receive the rabies vaccine without altering the vaccination schedule. There is no evidence of fetal abnormalities due to vaccination, making it a crucial preventive measure for expectant mothers. Moreover, modern rabies vaccines available in Vietnam are safe, pure and highly effective.

The cost of rabies vaccines varies depending on the facility and type of vaccine but accessing them through hospitals or clinics is crucial for timely and effective prevention.

In conclusion, understanding the importance of rabies vaccination and following medical advice can protect individuals and communities from this deadly disease. By receiving timely care and completing their regimen with healthcare professionals’ guidance, people can safeguard themselves from severe health consequences or even death caused by this infectious agent.
