In a stunning performance, Wenyi Ding, a freshman at Arizona State, won the prestigious Amer Ari Invitational with a 10-under 62 in the final round. This led to a 27-under 189 total, believed to be an NCAA men’s 54-hole scoring record according to College Golf Book.
Ding’s record-tying round included 10 birdies and no bogeys, and it followed rounds of 63-64. The young golfer is ranked No. 13 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking and has already made his mark on college golf with his impressive start to his career.
The field was tightly contested, with Washington’s Finn Koelle and San Jose State’s Carl Corpus tying for second at 18 under while North Carolina’s David Ford and Auburn’s Jackson Koivun tied for fourth with Texas Tech’s Matthew Comegys at 17 under.
In the team competition, North Carolina took the title at 68 under, five shots clear of Arizona State. Auburn finished third at 58 under. Despite dropping four places on the final day, Stanford still finished solo 11th despite the return of star Michael Thorbjornsen from injury. Thorbjornsen, a senior who is No. 1 in PGA Tour U, tied for
