India’s Under-19 Team No Longer Dominates World Cup Chase: Statistics

Australia has won the Under-19 World Cup for the fourth time after defeating India by 79 runs. This marks their fourth victory in the tournament, with previous titles coming in 1988, 2002, and 2010. Only India has won more titles, with a total of five crowns, including the previous edition in 2022. This also marks the fourth time that India has finished as runners-up, making them the most successful team in this category.

In the final match, Australia scored a total of 253 for 7 against India, setting a new record for highest total by any team in an Under-19 World Cup final. This surpasses England’s previous highest chase of 242 for 3 in the 1998 edition. It was Australia’s first victory against India since their last win in an Under-19 World Cup game in August 1998.

India’s loss to Australia ended their streak of 22 consecutive youth ODI matches won while chasing. Their last defeat came against Sri Lanka in August 2018. Only one team has successfully defended their Under-19 World Cup crown – Pakistan in 2006. Both Australia and India have finished as runners-up while attempting to defend their title in several editions including 2012, 2020 and this year’s tournament (in which they finished runners up to Pakistan).
