The Charlotte County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating former Detroit Tigers television analyst Craig Monroe on charges of sexual abuse. The allegations were made by a woman who claims that she was abused by Monroe when she was just 12 years old, dating back to his days as a minor-league player.
The abuse is said to have begun while Monroe lived with the woman’s family during his time in the minors, which is a common practice for players in the lower levels of the league. The woman, now 35, originally made the allegations on social media but later deleted them before reposting them recently. She also spoke with WJBK-TV, sharing disturbing details about her alleged abuse.
Monroe, who was on a freelance contract with Bally Sports Detroit, has not appeared on a Tigers broadcast since June 9. On June 11, Bally Sports Detroit sent him home after learning about the accusations. The Tigers and Bally Sports Detroit issued a joint statement saying that they take the allegations seriously and that Monroe will not be on the broadcast schedule indefinitely.
Through his attorney, Monroe has denied the allegations and plans to cooperate with law enforcement. He played in the majors from 2001-09 with multiple organizations, including the Tigers, Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and Minnesota Twins.
