Florida State secured a hard-fought victory over Virginia in an elimination game at the 2024 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. After a nail-biting 7-3 win, the Seminoles advanced to face the loser of the Tennessee-North Carolina game on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Charles Schwab Stadium.
FSU’s starting pitcher, Carson Dorsey, delivered an impressive performance on the mound, pitching into the eighth inning with seven strikeouts and 106 pitches. He kept Virginia’s batters off balance with his fastball and breaking ball combo, striking out three batters in a row in the fifth inning alone.
The crowd was energized by Jaime Ferrer’s two home runs and four RBIs. His first homer was a three-run shot that gave FSU a 6-0 lead after the fourth inning. The second homer was a solo shot that extended FSU’s lead to 7-0 in the sixth inning. The fans went wild as he took his seat on deck after each homer, cheering him on like he was their favorite player.
Despite being outhit 10-7 by Virginia, FSU emerged victorious thanks to some timely hits and solid defense. Alex Lodise’s leadoff homer in the sixth extended FSU’s lead to 7-0 and silenced Virginia’s offense for good. The Cavaliers were unable to keep up with FSU’s offense and were sent packing as the first team eliminated from the double-elimination tournament.
Injuries plagued both teams during the game. Virginia’s starting pitcher Jay Woolfolk sustained a knee injury after Ferrer hit his first home run, forcing Joe Savino to relieve him midway through the game
