On April 26, we celebrate National South Dakota Day by highlighting a local business that’s perfect for a family outing. The 1880 Train in Hill City is a must-visit destination for steam locomotive rides that have been operating since 1957. We spoke with Nate Anderson, one of the operators, to learn more about what the business has to offer this summer.
The 1880 Train aims to provide an authentic steam excursion ride that combines history and relaxation. The train’s typical route offers a one-hour leg between Hill City and Keystone, giving passengers the opportunity to explore both towns while learning about the history of the Black Hills. In addition to its regular rides, the 1880 Train hosts themed events throughout the summer such as old west shootouts and wine expresses.
During June and July, cowboys put on a performance alongside the train during old west shootouts. As fall approaches, the train shifts its focus to events like Wine Express which partners with local wineries to offer onboard refreshments and snacks ideal for a date night or social gathering. For more information on the 1880 Train’s schedule and to book a ride for the upcoming season starting on May 11, visit their website.
Overall, whether you’re looking for a unique family outing or a special date night experience, the 1880 Train has something to offer for everyone. So why not take a trip back in time and enjoy an authentic steam excursion ride?
