Expert Tips for Safely Cleaning and Drying Your Down Jacket

Nov 20, 2023

To keep your down jacket in top condition, it is important to use special care when washing and drying it. Always start by using a liquid detergent for delicate laundry or a specialized detergent made specifically for this type of clothing. It’s crucial to avoid overcrowding the washing machine, so wash only one jacket at a time. Before starting the washing cycle, insert silicone or tennis balls into the machine to prevent clumping of the feathers. Select the delicate laundry program on your washing machine and ensure that the water temperature does not exceed 30 or 40 degrees. Washing down jackets should be done once or at most twice a year, and never use the centrifuge during the process.

Drying a down jacket can be a lengthy process, especially if the weather is damp, cold, and windless. If you decide to air dry your jacket, try to do so on a windy day as this will help it dry more quickly and evenly. Be sure to shake your jacket before hanging it up to distribute the feathers properly. If you notice any clumps of feathers, this indicates that the inside of your jacket is still wet, so be patient and allow it to dry completely before using it again. Alternatively, you can dry your jacket in a dryer at low heat while including silicone or tennis balls to aid in drying.

It’s worth noting that washing and drying down jackets at home carries some risk of damage. If you are not satisfied with how the feathers are distributed after drying, you can use the dry spin program at low power as an option but always take extra care when doing so as using centrifuges is not recommended during washing process. In summary, taking special care while washing and drying down jackets will ensure that they remain in top condition for years to come
