In Orange County, New York on Monday, April 8, we will experience a rare near-total solar eclipse. At approximately 3:25 p.m., the sun will be almost completely blocked by the moon, causing darkness to fall over our area. This unique opportunity should not be missed, so we encourage everyone to take a moment to step outside and safely witness this phenomenon.
For students at Pine Bush High School, this event is especially important as they will have a half day off on Monday, April 8. All after-school activities will either be canceled or rescheduled. Be sure to check with your advisor or coach for more information.
It is extremely crucial that you do not look directly at the sun, the eclipse, or the moon during the event without proper eye protection. Approved eclipse glasses are the only safe way to view the eclipse as looking without them can result in permanent blindness. Sunglasses, Blue Blockers, or regular glasses are not sufficient protection. Make sure to acquire approved eclipse glasses from various sources or simply enjoy the midday darkening without looking directly at the sun.
The partial solar eclipse in Orange County will begin at 2:10 p.m., reaching its maximum at 3:25 p.m., and ending at 4:36 p.m., lasting for a total of 2 hours and 26 minutes. NASA’s website provides additional information on this upcoming event and solar eclipse glasses may still be available online or at local retail stores or libraries where they have been distributed for free
