In the US Trials held in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke a world record in the 400m hurdles by shaving off 0.03 seconds from her previous record of 51.90. She finished in a time of 50.65, which was one of the fastest races in history with four women clocking times under 53 seconds. However, McLaughlin-Levrone still managed to dominate the race by nearly two seconds.
McLaughlin-Levrone took the lead from the start and never looked back, surging ahead of her competitors including Anna Cockrell who finished second with a personal best time of 52.64 and Jasmine Jones who finished third with a personal best time of 52.77. Her strong performance allowed her to cross the finish line with a commanding lead, setting yet another world record in the process.
This isn’t the first time that McLaughlin-Levrone has broken records at the US Trials. In 2021, she set a world record of 51.90 in the 400m hurdles, which she later lowered to 51.46 to win the Olympic gold in Tokyo. She continued her record-breaking streak in 2022, setting a new world record of 51.41 at the US Championships before winning the world title in Oregon with a time of 50.68.
