Detroit has some of the worst air quality in the world with conditions falling into the unhealthy range.

In the aftermath of Fourth of July celebrations, Detroit has been ranked among the cities with the worst air quality in the world. According to IQAir, a global comparison of air quality in cities worldwide, Detroit is listed as No. 4 for worst air quality among major populated cities. When air quality falls into the unhealthy range, it poses risks for everyone, particularly sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with cardiac and pulmonary diseases.

During periods of poor air quality, it is important for people to limit their time spent outdoors. Several other cities in Southeast Michigan are also experiencing unhealthy conditions. These include Grosse Pointe Park, Clinton Township, St. Clair Shores, Oak Park, Berkley, Madison Heights, Dearborn, and Dearborn Heights.

In addition to the poor air quality, the National Weather Service has predicted isolated severe storms for Friday afternoon. These storms could bring winds of up to 60 miles per hour or more and hail that is one inch in diameter. While the risk for storms is marginal, they are expected to occur between 4 and 10 p.m. Stay tuned to our CBS Detroit NEXT Weather team for the latest updates on weather conditions in Southeast Michigan.
