Despite Russian Invasion, NATO Stays Strong in Ukraine, and Faces Challenges from Right-Wing Governments and Potential Trump Return

Despite the Russian military’s ongoing efforts to invade Ukraine, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that there is no indication that Russia has the strength or capabilities to make significant progress in the conflict. In an interview with AFP, he noted that Ukraine has been successful in holding its line and inflicting heavy losses on the invaders.

Following a major ground offensive in northeastern Ukraine in May, Russia has since shifted its focus to the Donetsk region in the east. The US-led transatlantic defense alliance has increased arms deliveries to Kyiv, hoping that the United States will remain a steadfast ally of NATO regardless of the outcome of the presidential election in November. Stoltenberg expressed concern over the possibility of a return to the White House by Donald Trump, who has previously criticized NATO and threatened to withdraw US troops from the alliance.

Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of NATO staying strong in light of potential challenges, including the rise of extreme right governments in countries like France. He highlighted the resilience of the alliance and urged countries to choose to remain committed to it for protection and security. While there are no guarantees in politics, Stoltenberg expressed hope that NATO will remain strong in any future challenges it may face.
