Curiosity’s Exploration Continues: Targeted Analysis of Stimson-Pahrump Contact and Environmental Monitoring on Sol 1067-1070.

Curiosity has completed a 19-mile drive on Sol 1067, returning to Missoula for more targeted scientific analysis. The focus of the three-sol plan is to study the Stimson-Pahrump contact in detail and determine the relative timing of the veins observed there. On Sol 1068, ChemCam LIBS will be used to analyze four different “Missoula” targets (Missoula A, B, C, and D) to understand the chemistry across the contact. Several Mastcam images will also be taken to document these targets. Additionally, environmental monitoring activities will be conducted over the weekend to assess the atmosphere’s opacity and search for dust devils.

After conducting thorough analyses with ChemCam, Curiosity will resume driving through Marias Pass on Sol 1070 and take post-drive imaging to prepare for science activities next week. According to Lauren Edgar, a Research Geologist at the USGS Astrogeology Science Center and a member of the MSL science team, this update applies. Keep in mind that planned rover activities are subject to change based on factors such as the Martian environment, communication relays, and rover status.
