Central College receives $50,000 grant for research on ‘decision science’ curriculum

Pella-based manufacturing company Precision Pulley & Idler (PPI) has awarded Central College a $50,000 planning grant to develop a new curriculum in decision science. The aim of this collaboration is to better prepare students for the rapidly changing world of business, with a focus on artificial intelligence, analytics, and digital transformation.

Leslie Johnston, the vice president of human resources at PPI, expressed pride in supporting Central College as they enhance their offerings for students. “We are excited about this partnership with Central College and look forward to seeing how it will help students succeed in today’s business landscape,” she said.

Central College Vice President for Academic Affairs Mary Strey expressed excitement about the opportunity to expand the teaching of decision science. She noted that certain elements of decision science are already being covered in existing courses but that the grant would allow faculty to develop a new program and possibly introduce new courses.

Central College President Mark Putnam emphasized the importance of preparing students for future workforce needs. He thanked PPI for their support and highlighted how this planning grant will enable faculty and industry experts to develop a curriculum that meets the demands of the changing business landscape. This partnership with PPI marks an important milestone for Central College and paves the way for its future success.

The new curriculum will involve collaboration between different departments at the college, including math, computer science, and business. By focusing on decision science, Central College aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in businesses now and in the future. This initiative will address challenges posed by shifting workplaces, new technologies, and changing consumer behaviors.
