Central College dominates 2021 Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest with National Awards

Central College has been recognized in the College Sports Communicators’ Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest, winning three awards including two national honors. Last year, Central had three entries recognized in the contest as well.

One of the awards was for first place in the Coach/Administrator Profile category in the CSC College Division. The winning feature titled “Teachers of the game” from Civitas magazine highlighted faculty members Keith Jones and Russ Goodman who also serve as assistant coaches for softball and women’s soccer respectively.

Another award Central received was for second place nationally and first place in District 7 for Event Coverage. The article titled “Believe it! Terrell shot seals Central men’s basketball crown” covered an American Rivers title-clinching victory at Simpson College. Additionally, a profile of former Central defensive back Adam Gregg ’06, who now serves as Iowa’s lieutenant governor, titled “Schipper Stadium path leads to Iowa Capitol for Gregg,” took second place in District 7 in the General Feature/Blog category.

Larry Happel, the athletics communications director at Central for over 45 years, wrote all three award-winning stories. He has previously won the CSC Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest National Story of the Year Award in 2017 and has received a total of 18 CSC writing awards, as well as two from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. He has also earned 22 CSC publication awards and was inducted into the CSC Hall of Fame in 2010, in addition to serving as a former CSC board member and past D3SIDA president.
