In a major development for healthcare in South Jersey, Cape Regional Health System has officially joined forces with Cooper University Health Care. The merger, which has been in the works for over a year and a half, marks a new chapter for healthcare in the region.
The coastal health system’s flagship hospital, Cape Regional Medical Center, has been renamed Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional. This move is expected to allow the combined systems to serve even more people in Cape May and Atlantic counties. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on what aspects of life in New Jersey they would like WHYY News to cover, from Camden and Cherry Hill to Trenton and the Jersey Shore.
Garry Gilbert, former chairman of the Cape Regional Board of Trustees, expressed optimism about the merger, calling it a significant development for the region. Christine Winn, senior vice president and chief regional officer at Cooper, will be overseeing the operations in Cape May and Atlantic counties. The collaboration between the two health systems aims to enhance access to high-quality care and improve the overall healthcare experience for residents in the area.
In addition to taking over Cape Regional’s hospital, Cooper has also acquired the system’s urgent care centers, outpatient primary and specialty care offices, and other health services in the region. This integration of services is expected to strengthen the healthcare delivery system in South Jersey and bring benefits to the local community.
