Ukrainian soldiers have been subjected to brutal attacks by waves of Russian troops, according to a Ukrainian officer who spoke to BBC News. Lieutenant Colonel Anton Bayev of the Khartia Brigade of Ukraine’s National Guard explained that Russia employs these units to locate Ukrainian firing equipment and wear down Ukrainian units.

The relentless barrage of attacks from Russian troops has taken a toll on Ukrainian soldiers, both physically and psychologically. Despite the intensity of these tactics, Russia has only seen incremental successes in its invasion of Ukraine. The constant barrage of enemy forces that have to be faced and destroyed daily are a significant challenge for Ukrainian troops. Russia, being a much larger country, has an advantage in terms of manpower over Ukraine, which it exploits in attempts to overwhelm Ukrainian positions.

Russian casualties have been substantial, with reports of “meat assault” tactics being implemented in attacks on Ukrainian cities. The ruthless approach taken by Russian commanders, which includes leaving their dead and wounded on the battlefield, has drawn criticism even from within Russia. UK military intelligence reported a spike in Russian injuries and deaths in May, with Russia losing around 1,200 troops daily.

Despite the significant losses suffered by Russia, the country has managed to replenish its troop numbers through various means such as offering lucrative military contracts, drafting prisoners, and utilizing foreign mercenaries. The increase in casualties came as Russia intensified its attacks on Kharkiv, taking advantage of delays in Western aid reaching Ukraine’s front lines. The dedication and resilience of Ukrainian forces have been tested, but they continue to defend their territory against overwhelming odds.
