Delaware Tourism Office Collaborates with New and Existing Sports Facilities to Attract Events to the State

The Delaware Tourism Office is launching the Delaware Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund to support sports facilities throughout the state. The fund was established through the FY24 Bond Bill and will be open for applications from March 1st to April 12th.

Delaware Tourism Office Director Jessica Welch stated, “The purpose of this fund is to provide financial support to sports facilities that hold events and tournaments throughout the year, attracting out-of-state visitors, and putting people into our hotel rooms. This fund will help us remain competitive in the sports tourism industry.”

Delaware has recently hosted several high-profile sporting events, including the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Tournament, the PGA’s 2022 BMW Championship, the MEAC Volleyball Championship, and many regional high school and youth sports events. Welch emphasized that they plan to support a range of different facilities with this fund.

Welch explained that weekend events during the summer bring a significant amount of money to the state because they are held consistently and create a reputation at their facility. Officials expect this fund will help attract more visitors and continue to shine a light on reasons to visit Delaware.

The Delaware Tourism Office will hold two informative webinars for potential applicants later this month to learn more about the fund and how to apply.
