The head of the air force, praised by Luis Arce for not joining the attempt, has now been arrested

On Friday, the Bolivian government arrested former Air Force commander Marcelo Javier Zegarra for his alleged involvement in the coup attempt that occurred earlier this month. Despite earlier praise from President Luis Arce, Zegarra was apprehended along with General Juan José Zúñiga as part of the ongoing investigation into the failed coup.

During a press conference on Thursday, President Arce recounted a tense moment with Zúñiga and Zegarra, where he rebuked them for their actions. However, he later thanked Zegarra for his reflection on the situation. Zegarra had voluntarily submitted himself for questioning and was arrested after providing his statement.

In addition to military personnel, civilians involved in the coup attempt have also been arrested. Aníbal Aguilar Gómez, described as the “ideologist” of the failed coup, was among those detained. Seven others have also been arrested in connection with the events.

The Bolivian government has confirmed ongoing investigations and arrests related to the coup attempt, targeting both military and civilian individuals. The Public Prosecutor’s Office is seeking additional suspects, including retired soldiers allegedly involved in the plot.
