The classical music community is in mourning after the death of talented operatic soloist Jodie Devos at the young age of 35. Devos, a Belgian soprano, took her last breath in Paris while surrounded by her loved ones. Her final performance was at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in April, where she left a lasting impression on the audience.
Devos’ passing has led to an outpouring of grief from fellow artists who paid tribute to her remarkable talent. Soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan described Devos as a vibrant and radiant artist, while conductor Dirk Brossé mourned the loss of one of Belgium’s greatest musicians. French string soloists Renaud and Gautier Capuçon, as well as American soprano Lisette Oropesa, also expressed their deep sadness over Devos’ passing.
Throughout her career, Devos excelled in the coloratura repertoire of composers like Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, and Verdi. Her virtuosic singing in the soprano register captivated audiences with its intensity and precision. Devos’ recordings for labels like Alpha Classics and Warner Classics showcased her incredible talent, particularly in her rendition of Mozart’s ‘The Queen of the Night’ aria. She completed her masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2013 and went on to win prizes at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium.
Devos graced the stages of Europe’s leading opera houses and performed with renowned orchestras like the National Orchestra of Belgium, French National Orchestra, and Munich Philharmonic. Her untimely death has left a void in the opera world, robbing it of a truly exceptional talent whose legacy will live on through her recordings and performances.
