A case of H5N1 influenza infection detected in US dairy cows

In Texas, a man has been diagnosed with H5N1 bird flu after coming into close contact with infected dairy cows. This is the second confirmed case of the virus in the US, following a case that occurred in Colorado in 2022. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported on April 1 that preliminary analysis of the virus strain in the new infection did not show any concerning mutations.

The CDC stated that while this new case does not change the assessment of the public health risk associated with H5N1 influenza in the United States, it does emphasize that close contact with infected animals can still pose a risk to human health. However, current antibiotics are effective against circulating H5N1 influenza strains, and if the virus mutates to spread easily in humans, existing vaccines will also be effective in preventing it.

Avian flu can be transmitted to humans, but cases are rare and typically occur only among people who have had close contact with infected animals. The death rate for this flu strain is very high, up to 50% compared to 3% in regular flu cases. While there is currently no need for widespread concern about an outbreak of H5N1 influenza in the United States, individuals who work closely with poultry or other birds should take precautions such as wearing protective clothing and practicing good hygiene to minimize their risk of exposure.
