A healthcare worker is seen preparing doses of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine at a vaccine hub in Rome in June 2021. Despite its global reach, AstraZeneca has announced the withdrawal of its highly successful coronavirus vaccine due to declining demand, pointing to the availability of new vaccines on the market. The company has stated that the vaccine, known as Vaxzevria and developed in partnership with the University of Oxford, has not generated revenue since April 2023. This decision has led AstraZeneca to cease manufacturing and supplying the product, and prompted it to initiate the withdrawal of marketing authorizations for Vaxzevria within Europe. In response to this, the European Medicines Agency has also announced the withdrawal of Vaxzevria’s marketing authorization in EU countries. AstraZeneca remains proud of its role in ending the pandemic, but this is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
