Amputation of Meritorious Artist Nguyen Bang Thai: Overcoming Diabetic Necrosis with Promising Outcome

Nguyen Bang Thai, a 72-year-old Meritorious Artist from Vietnam, recently underwent surgery to amputate half of his right foot due to diabetic necrosis. For over a decade, Bang Thai has been battling diabetes, which has led to severe complications. He has been bedridden for the past two years, experiencing numbness, burning sensations, chronic pain, and insomnia in both feet.

Just three months ago, a necrotic ulcer appeared on his right leg, which eventually led to the amputation of his toe. However, the wound continued to deteriorate and prompted him to seek treatment at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Hung explained that the patient’s twisted blood vessels and atherosclerosis made the intervention challenging. Without immediate treatment, there was a high risk of infection spreading throughout the body. A team of specialists performed surgery on Mr. Thai to remove the necrotic tissue, revascularize his leg, and amputate half of his foot to prevent further complications.

After surgery, Mr. Thai experienced less pain and better sleep, allowing for improved management of his diabetes. He continues to receive treatment for his condition and psychological support to overcome depression.

Doctors advised Mr. Thai to quit smoking, avoid sugary drinks and maintain proper foot care to prevent future complications. Diabetes-related foot issues are common among the elderly and can lead to severe infections necessitating amputation.

Bang Thai’s prolific career in the arts includes numerous works that have earned him recognition as a Meritorious Artist.
