Amazon Ditching ‘Just Walk Out’ Technology, Introducing ‘Dash Cart’: What You Need to Know

Amazon is discontinuing the use of ‘Just Walk Out’ technology in grocery stores

Amazon has made significant changes to its self-service technology at Amazon Fresh stores in the United States. The company has discontinued the “Just Walk Out” technology that enabled customers to pick up items and leave without waiting in a checkout line. Instead, Amazon is introducing the “Amazon Dash Cart” at these stores, which allows shoppers to scan items and place them in the cart for automatic payment processing.

According to Jessica Martin, an Amazon spokesperson, the company has spent time redesigning its Amazon Fresh stores to provide a better shopping experience for its customers. Customers had requested features like easily finding products and deals, viewing their receipts while shopping, and understanding how much money they saved. The new “Amazon Dash Cart” technology aims to provide all of these benefits and more.

While Amazon has discontinued the “Just Walk Out” technology at larger Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., it is keeping this technology at Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K. The company opened its first cashier-less physical grocery store outside the U.S. in London in 2021. Despite this change, customers can still expect a seamless shopping experience with minimal wait times and no need for manual checkout processes.
