Amazon abandons ‘Just Walk Out’ technology due to ongoing technical challenges

The decision by Amazon to discontinue the “Just Walk Out” technology in its Fresh grocery stores across the United States is due to various issues with the self-checkout system. The technology, which was intended to revolutionize the shopping experience, relied on a network of cameras and sensors to track customers throughout the store, but still required significant human involvement. Over 1,000 people in India were tasked with scanning camera feeds to ensure that customers were accurately checking out.

Despite its high-tech nature, the Just Walk Out system faced legal challenges in New York where a class action suit accused Amazon of collecting biometric identifier information without proper disclosure to consumers. This violation of state law necessitated a reevaluation of the technology and its implementation in stores.

In light of these challenges, Amazon has decided to remove the Just Walk Out technology from its Fresh grocery stores, which were only implemented in half of the total Amazon Fresh locations in the US. This decision indicates that a more traditional approach to checkout may be necessary for the time being as Amazon continues to evaluate other options for improving the shopping experience for its customers.
